SHIP LOGS AND GENERAL MADNESS
November 27 2008
It's great to have a big boat with all of the amenities, if they work.  Since July 2008 Niki and I have been working on those comforts.  This Thanks Giving we were extra  thankful.  We were able to shower on the boat.  Not just one of those rinse off deals but an honest to goodness shower.  Niki says," I don't know why, but when I shower on the boat I feel extra clean.", go figure.  It took a hot water heater, sealing the shower stall, and plumbing the drain pump.  You might enjoy the PG rated photos of us enjoying the goodness of a shower while anchored off an obscure set of islands in Mexico.

Well,it has been some sort of week here in usually sunny San Diego.  We returned from a wonderful wedding in Green Bay, Wisconsin late on Sunday.  On Monday it was so stormy here that we couldn't row to shore until three o'clock in the afternoon.  Two boats in our mooring field broke free.  One, a 40 foot concrete boat went right to shore and later a 28 foot sailboat went out into the channel.  It is now Wednesday and still raining, not real heavy though.  There is 6 inches of snow just a half hour drive from here in the mountains
Our visit to Green Bay was super nice except for the cold weather.  I got to meet some of Niki's friends and she was able to meet some of my family there.  A real treat for the both of us

There is not a lot going one here at Big Tuna central.  We have been putting away tons of baby clothes, thank you to everyone.  We are about to order the mattresses for the forpeak and that is very exciting.   I had a great birthday on the 27th.  Niki invited some friends over for a BBQ and whatnot.  Other than that Niki has finished her employment for a time until the baby comes and I think she loves the free time to prep for baby Dawn.

Not a whole lot going on here at the Big Tuna.  We are still waiting for that little girl of ours to arrive.  If we get to 42 weeks we will have to go for induced labor.  This is a bit of a bummer as Niki wanted to have as natural a birth as possible.  My dad came out last weekend and helped again on some woodwork projects.  Man is he a huge help in that department.  Soon I will have some pictures up of our progress and an explanation on the Boat page.
I want to give big props to the KONA KAI Marina for letting us use their facilities for the last month and a half.  This has been a big big deal for Niki to not have to take a skiff to shore let alone climbing down the ladder to get in the skiff.  If you visit San Diego on your journey make sure to check in with Pete the dock master, very cool people.

Well Dawn Nokomis Destache was born on March 3rd 2009 at 10:58am.  She is very healthy and due to the extra time in the oven she is a good size.  This little bundle of greatness was 8 pounds 5 ounces and 19.6 inches long.  All of you who said it will change your life were not kidding.  There are so many different emotions that ebb and flow it is hard to get a grasp of them.
Niki is doing great learning how to breast feed and balance sleep.  I have been taking as big of a role as I can by getting Dawn up just before her feed and checking her diaper.  This wakes her up, usually with crying and screams, so that Niki can get a good feeding in.  Then when they are done I take care of putting Dawn to sleep.  Well I am tired and still need to put photos and videos up on the site, so untill next time.
Well we have been very busy here on the good ship BIG TUNA.  Dawn is a regular boat baby now with a few anchorages under her belt and this weekend a trip to Mission Bay.  Since our last posting we have been gobbling up the projects.  We have trimmed out the refrigerator,  installed a
16000btu diesel heater,  added a bolster to the side of our saloon seating, completely sealed the hull to deck joint, and installed the aluminum toe rail.  There will be more info on the BOAT page.  After so much work we are taking a much needed R & R weekend here in Bonita Cove, Mission Bay.
Back to that baby Dawn's story.  Her and Niki spend most of the day on the boat.  Dawn naps in her cabin and in the evening she takes naps in the saloon.  She has a really great chair that vibrates and plays toons.  When we all go to sleep Dawn sleeps with us in the aft stateroom.  In 3 months or so she will sleep all by herself at night in her stateroom.  Right now it is warm enough for her to be hanging out with me in the cockpit enjoying the fresh yet salty air.

Busy, busy, busy......we had a really nice visit with my Mom and Aunt Mary last month.  It was very cool for them to see how we live and what we call home, Mom couldn't be more supportive and that was awesome.
Most recently we purchased and had modified a radar arch to also be framework for a hard top.  Figuring out what we are going to top it with has caused some sleepless nights.  Originally I thought 1/4 inch Starboard, but after installing that material it doesn't seem to be right so we are looking into something different.
Also we installed a new pedestal guard with tabs welded on for our chart plotter.  Lastly we have received a US Spars boom for the main sail.
I really need to focus on our rigging as we want to pull masts starting in the fall.  The focus is really in saving up the money to do it.
